However, its ubiquity has also raised growing concerns about its possible\u00a0<strong>negative effects on health<\/strong>, especially regarding\u00a0<strong>food safety<\/strong>. Various scientific studies have warned about the\u00a0<strong>migration of plastic compounds into food<\/strong>\u00a0as well as the\u00a0<strong>presence of microplastics in everyday consumer products<\/strong>. Discover with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/en\/\">KuokoKitchen<\/a>\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>impact of these phenomena on food safety.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chemicals That Migrate Into Food<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plastics<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>made of synthetic polymers<\/strong>&nbsp;to which&nbsp;<strong>additives are added<\/strong>&nbsp;to improve flexibility, durability, transparency, or other characteristics. Many of&nbsp;<strong>these additives<\/strong>, such as phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA),&nbsp;<strong>can migrate into food<\/strong>&nbsp;when plastic is heated or degraded. This migration is more likely in&nbsp;<strong>fatty, acidic, or hot foods<\/strong>, and in&nbsp;<strong>reused or damaged packaging<\/strong>. The problem is that these compounds act as&nbsp;<strong>endocrine disruptors<\/strong>, meaning they&nbsp;<strong>interfere with the human hormonal system even at very low doses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Case of BPA and Its Substitutes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most studied cases is&nbsp;<strong>BPA<\/strong>, found in&nbsp;<strong>reusable bottles<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>storage containers, and can linings<\/strong>. These&nbsp;<strong>tiny fragments<\/strong>, less than&nbsp;<strong>five millimeters in diameter<\/strong>, originate from the&nbsp;<strong>breakdown of larger plastics<\/strong>&nbsp;or are&nbsp;<strong>present from the start of manufacturing<\/strong>. They have been detected in&nbsp;<strong>drinking water<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>sea salt<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>fish<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>seafood<\/strong>, and even in&nbsp;<strong>fruits<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>vegetables<\/strong>. A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) noted that although conclusive evidence on human toxicity is lacking,&nbsp;<strong>microplastics in food<\/strong>&nbsp;could act as&nbsp;<strong>carriers of chemical contaminants or pathogens<\/strong>, and may also trigger&nbsp;<strong>inflammatory responses in the body.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"648\" height=\"432\" src=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/envases-de-plastico.jpg\" alt=\"envases de plastico\" class=\"wp-image-11730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/envases-de-plastico.jpg 648w, https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/envases-de-plastico-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/envases-de-plastico-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 648px) 100vw, 648px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Single-Use Plastics<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another worrying issue is the&nbsp;<strong>widespread use of single-use plastics in the food industry<\/strong>. Packaging, storing, and transporting food in disposable plastics facilitates distribution but also&nbsp;<strong>increases human exposure to potentially harmful substances.<\/strong>&nbsp;Heating plastic containers in microwaves or consuming hot beverages in polystyrene cups are common practices that promote the release of particles and chemical compounds into food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Indirect Consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<strong>environmental impact of plastics<\/strong>, though indirect,&nbsp;<strong>also affects food safety.<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Plastic waste in oceans and soils<\/strong>&nbsp;disrupts the food chain.&nbsp;<strong>Marine animals ingest plastics<\/strong>, accumulating them in their tissues. When these animals are consumed by humans, the compounds can transfer to our bodies. Likewise,&nbsp;<strong>soils contaminated with microplastics may alter crop fertility<\/strong>, affecting the&nbsp;<strong>nutritional quality of fruits, vegetables, and cereals<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can We Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to this reality, both consumers and institutions are taking action. Individually, it is recommended to&nbsp;<strong>avoid heating food in plastic containers<\/strong>, choose&nbsp;<strong>glass<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/en\/kitchen-products\/?filter_color=acero\"><strong>stainless steel containers<\/strong><\/a>, and&nbsp;<strong>reduce consumption of packaged products<\/strong>. Legislatively, the European Union has banned some single-use plastics and demands greater traceability and safety for food-contact materials. Research is also being promoted to develop biodegradable or safer alternative plastics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of plastics in the food sector raises questions about their long-term safety. Although many uncertainties remain, the available evidence suggests adopting a&nbsp;<strong>more cautious approach<\/strong>. The growing presence of microplastics and chemical substances in our food has led some experts to speak of a worrying&nbsp;<strong>\u201cplastic food\u201d<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>Choosing safer alternatives, promoting regulation, and reducing our plastic dependence<\/strong>&nbsp;are key steps to protect food safety. On an individual level, small actions such as avoiding unnecessary packaging or preferring reusable materials may seem minimal but collectively have a significant impact.&nbsp;<strong>Education and collective awareness are essential<\/strong>&nbsp;to move toward more responsible consumption and truly safe nutrition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We live\u00a0surrounded by plastics.
