But have you ever stopped to ask yourself:&nbsp;<strong>what are these items made of?<\/strong>&nbsp;Or&nbsp;<strong>what happens to those plastics when you heat them, wash them repeatedly, or use them more than you should?<\/strong>&nbsp;Not all plastics are the same, and though you may not notice it, some release substances that end up in your food. That\u2019s why at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/en\/\">KuokoKitchen<\/a>, we believe it\u2019s worth taking a moment to ask:&nbsp;<strong>what plastics are you using in your kitchen, and which ones should you stop using now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Los pl\u00e1sticos en contacto con alimentos<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cuando los pl\u00e1sticos se calientan o deterioran<\/strong>, pueden<strong> liberar sustancias qu\u00edmicas que<\/strong> <strong>migran a los alimentos. <\/strong>Algunas de estas sustancias, como el <strong>bisfenol A <\/strong>(BPA) o los <strong>ftalatos<\/strong>, han sido asociadas con <strong>trastornos hormonales, problemas de fertilidad y otros efectos<\/strong> en la salud. Some of these substances\u2014like&nbsp;<strong>bisphenol A (BPA)<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>phthalates<\/strong>\u2014have been linked to&nbsp;<strong>hormonal disruptions, fertility issues, and other health effects<\/strong>. That\u2019s why it\u2019s not enough for a container to simply be \u201cplastic\u201d\u2014<strong>it\u2019s essential to know what type of plastic it is and how it should be used<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Plastics and Their Classification<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Plastics are identified by a number from 1 to 7<\/strong>&nbsp;inside a triangle of arrows\u2014this is the recycling code.&nbsp;<strong>That number gives us clues about the plastic\u2019s composition and safety level:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>PET (1)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Polyethylene Terephthalate: found in water and soda bottles. It\u2019s meant for single use only, as it can release toxic substances when reused or exposed to heat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HDPE (2)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 High-Density Polyethylene: found in milk jugs, juice bottles, and cleaning product containers. One of the safest plastics, considered food-safe.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PVC (3)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Polyvinyl Chloride: common in food wrap and some utensils. Contains phthalates and other additives that can migrate into food, especially when heated or in contact with fats. Best avoided.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LDPE (4)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Low-Density Polyethylene: used in freezer bags and flexible wraps. Safer than PVC, though not recommended for use with hot foods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PP (5)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Polypropylene: widely used in food containers, reusable bottles, and yogurt cups. Heat-resistant, making it suitable for microwaves and dishwashers. One of the most recommended plastics for kitchen use. In terms of\u00a0<strong>polypropylene toxicity<\/strong>, current studies show it is among the safest materials for food contact, as long as it\u2019s used properly and not damaged.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PS (6)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Polystyrene: found in meat trays, disposable cups, and fast food containers. Can release styrene, a potentially carcinogenic substance. Should be avoided.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other (7)<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 Includes mixed plastics or polycarbonates. Many contain BPA, though some are now labeled \u201cBPA-free.\u201d As a precaution, avoid this category unless the product clearly states it\u2019s safe.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/botella-plastico.jpg\" alt=\"botella plastico\" class=\"wp-image-11769\" style=\"width:629px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/botella-plastico.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/botella-plastico-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/botella-plastico-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/kuokokitchen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/botella-plastico-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastics Recommended for Food Use<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The safest plastics for storing or heating food<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>HDPE (2)<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>LDPE (4)<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>PP (5)<\/strong>. Among them,&nbsp;<strong>polypropylene (PP)<\/strong>&nbsp;is especially recommended: it withstands high temperatures, is durable, and won\u2019t release harmful substances when used correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When choosing&nbsp;<strong>containers, reusable bottles, or kitchen utensils<\/strong>, look for items clearly marked as microwave-, dishwasher-, or freezer-safe, depending on how you\u2019ll use them. It\u2019s also crucial to check that they are&nbsp;<strong>BPA-free<\/strong>, especially if they\u2019ll be used to heat liquids or meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Plastics to Avoid<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Plastics like&nbsp;<strong>PET (1)<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>PVC (3)<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>PS (6)<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>should be avoided in the kitchen<\/strong>, particularly&nbsp;<strong>when storing or heating food<\/strong>. PET, although safe for a single use, should not be reused, while PVC and PS can release toxic components when in contact with fats or exposed to heat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be cautious with&nbsp;<strong>plastics that lack clear labeling<\/strong>.
